Living Better Stories

The first step is the hardest to take

11 Flares 11 Flares ×

With the first step comes an awful sensation of becoming vulnerable.

Up to this point your dream has simply been an idea in your head. It was a secret known only by you and people you trust.

When you take that first step, the secret is out. Your dream can be known by anyone who is paying enough attention to notice. And we are all afraid of being noticed.

Being noticed brings the potential for ridicule and judgment.

But once you take that first step, you make a transition in your effort to live a better story. You are not the same person you were yesterday.

Instead of being a dreamer, you have become a doer.

Although your goal might be 1,000,000 steps away, you are now 1 step closer and that is a better place to be than you were the day before. Ridicule and all.

But you have to take that first step.

  1. I struggle with this unbelievably. The dreamer quality runs in my family, and whenever I see it within myself, I’m determined to be a doer. Balance seems to be the answer to everything, doesn’t it?

  2. So true Jeremy! Anytime you pursue something creative, it shouldn’t be comfortable. It should challenge you and make you nervous, even scared. Obviously this is all easier said than done.  Actions speak so MUCH louder than words.

  3. Balance. Something none of us are good at.

  4. I think we will always be uncomfortable, but we can learn to recognize the discomfort. As you described it, it can actually be a useful tool to tell us we are on the right track.

The first step is always the hardest. Thank you for the reminder.
